Garmin watch key ring and USB-C charger: $9 for two packs | DC Rainmaker

Huge list of Black Friday sports techniques (more than 100)!

This includes a discount of more than US$200 for the Garmin Fenix 6 series, and a discount of US$200 for the Tacx NEO 2T (the latest model). Plus more offers, including GoPro Hero 10 Black, Garmin Edge Bike GPS, Fitbit, Polar Watch/Sensor, Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats, Peloton Bike/Treadmill, Suunto, COROS, Smart Indoor Bike, Drone, etc. Wait. Full details are here!

As a supplier of quirky charging cables, I am back with another part-this is not one, but two different Garmin USB-C watch chargers. Two years ago, we gave up two packs of Garmin rechargeable hockey pucks worth $9 for the last time. They are usually much better than ordinary rechargeable hockey pucks (literally, that was the day of this article two years ago). Since then, according to Amazon alone, about 20,000 people have picked up these cables (seriously). Admittedly, I have one on every surface in DCR Cave and at home, so maybe most of them are mine.

In any case, with more and more computers (and ports) now becoming USB-C, I think it’s time to re-examine these issues with two additional solutions. In fact, there are three solutions. Two of them are USB-C, and one of them has been on my desk for a few years, I think it’s time to share.

With this quick and effective introduction, let's take a closer look. To my wife's chagrin, I bought all these cables myself. Although she sometimes steals them. The point is that none of these unnamed companies know who I am, nor do they sponsor. It's just that I'm doing my cable fetish.

If you are too excited to read this article, here is what I have been using and like (the links should be properly localized to your local Amazon store):

– Two packs of USB-C Garmin watch keychain charger for $8.99 (two packs in the UK 7.99 Euros) – One pack of USB-C Garmin watch charging cables for $6.90 (single cable 8.90 Euros) – Garmin watch charging stand/cable (normal USB) USD 13.99 (EUR 12.99 per device)

As long as you have a Garmin watch that uses the standard Garmin charging port of the past few years (shown above, with four small dots, but not a clip-on charger), you can start using it.

As with the past two packs of regular Garmin charging cables, the exact names will usually differ slightly between Amazon countries, although they are all identical products (and always identical stock photo images). So, let's dive into it!

This spring, COROS released a small keychain charger for watches. This is so cool because you can stick it on your key ring, and if you forget your main charger, you always know that it can be used as a backup when you travel. Nevertheless, there were not many trips in May last year.

Now, this is basically the same concept as that, but neater and smaller—two packs are only $8.99. Use the COROS charger, which has a built-in USB port, and this assumes you have a USB-C cable. This is a fair assumption.

Using the Garmin charger, you can see the Garmin charger/port on the side of the small pod:

On the other side is the USB-C port, you can plug any USB-C cable into it.

At the same time, the edge is a small hole for connecting the cord of the keychain charger:

Otherwise, you can pass the key ring through it, which is more secure (and not so soft).

Anyway, the idea here is that you connect it to something like your key, and then you just need to plug in a cable to charge your watch. I use it as a backup charger, not a charger for daily use. For example, if I realize that I forgot the charger while traveling or other things.

(And don’t worry about putting my keys on the Internet. First, because frankly, I don’t even know what half of these keys are for. Second, the half I know is either not displayed or not displayed Very important. For example, that red key? It is for the door of an old bakery in Paris. There is never time to take it off.)

In terms of usage, I tried it with six USB-C cables here, and there was no problem-including my MacBook charger:

It will also transfer data correctly (see below), but since USB-C is the wild west of the cable specification, your mileage may vary. But in all the random cables on my desk and in my bag, it can easily transfer data without any problems. I dared not open the large plastic container with random USB-C cables in the storage room because I was still sitting here to test them.

In terms of fit, I feel very crisp, better than stock Garmin chargers. Although I will give the red USB-C cable listed below a slightly higher level of crispness, its sound is very clear.

Since it is a two-piece package, you can put one on the key chain and then paste the other... I don’t know, another key chain. Maybe in your wallet, or in your backpack. Look, more spare charger locations are better. How you manage proper redundancy is your problem, not mine.

This charger is compatible with any watch with a standard Garmin charging port. Flip your watch, as long as it looks like this, you are gold:

This does not include things like clip-on watch chargers (such as Garmin FR645 or Garmin MARQ). Therefore, if your watch has a clip-on charger, it will not work.

With this, this is all the information about this charger. Again, I am a fan of "normal work", which meets the requirements. Here is its link-$8.99 for two pieces (7.99 euros for two pieces).

Next, suppose you only need a USB-C cable with a Garmin charging port on the end. In this case, the above is your cable. I bought the red one because it was obviously cooler. Moreover, this is the only option.

I won't kill it, just be aware that its charges are the same as your previous cables. I have tested it using the wall-mounted USB-C port and the USB-C port on the computer. For example, this morning I charged FR745 from 11% to 96% in 60 minutes.

The cable feels well-built, but may actually be slightly over-built. It is just stronger than the existing/stocked Garmin charging cable. The cable is 1.5m long. What's more noteworthy is that when you put it in place, it becomes super crisp. Like, it actually produced an echo. Watch the video!

Both the data cable and the charging cable can be used. This is how it connects to my computer and displays the contents of FR745:

I also used a network cable to copy a bunch of music, and the speed was normal. I will provide props for the company's marketing materials, and they have put extra effort in creating beautiful graphics to show that it has various voltage protection functions. It also stated that they conducted 6,000 bending tests on it. Next time I will hire my child to replace the bending test. They should be kept busy for a while.

Oh, this cable has 10,477 reviews of 4.5/5 stars in the Amazon German store, and honestly, they seem to be a mix of multiple SKUs shown in the rating. But in the Amazon US store, it is a single SKU, showing 115 4.5/5 star reviews.

This charger is compatible with any watch with a standard Garmin charging port. Just like the first unit-Garmin has only made a port that looks like this (with four pins). This does not include things like clip-on watches. Therefore, if your watch has a clip-on charger, it will not work.

Now, as often happens when buying cables on Amazon, some models/brands are good and some are bad. For example, not only did I buy the red one, I also bought another one from another brand-because, why not? In that case, it doesn't work at all. It will not charge any fees. Maybe it's just a one-off, but I just want to throw it away in case someone tries to save a dollar or two by looking for other random cables. In this case, the cable is no longer available (I bought it a year ago), and the reviews are bad. So I guess this system works.

Anyway, back to a valid cable,-$6.90 for a cable (or €8.90 for a cable).

In addition, because I have never written a review on it, I use another non-USB-C Garmin charger almost every day, and this is this small cradle charger. It just sits at my desk, receiving a steady stream of Garmin equipment, which needs to be filled up before various photography adventures. Or because I only need to charge my watch. I bought it two years ago (actually from two years ago to now):

The small charging port can be oriented in one of two directions, depending on the Garmin watch you own. This supports four directions (up/down/left/right). It takes two seconds to eject the back and swap it:

The compatibility in this respect is the same as the previous two models, basically all watches that support the standard Garmin charging port. This does not include things like clip-on watches. Therefore, if your watch has a clip-on charger, it will not work.

This has been used for a long time and I am very satisfied. I use it for data and charging, and there is no problem on Mac or PC. Of course, it doesn't care, it's just like any other Garmin charger, just proud of itself on its stand. The bracket is priced at 13.99 US dollars (or 12.99 euros).

This is a clever thing that happened when a company managed to insist on using their charging cable for more than a year or two: a third-party company started to develop it. Now it can be said that Garmin should provide these things on its own (just like COROS does)-maybe the quality is good, but hey, it's cool, the third party can easily develop for this.

As for the risk here, it is a fairly low risk. First, countless Garmin employees told me that the 3rd party charging puck I released about two years ago was used by many Garmin employees. But secondly, the way USB works is that the device in question (in this case your watch) actually specifies how much power to pull. So the watch will ask how much power it needs, and the USB charging port just provides it.

As for why there is a special port, well, this is all for waterproofing. Although it makes sense for Garmin to switch their Edge cycling devices (and other non-watch devices) to USB-C for charging, it actually makes no sense to use USB-C in wearables. Waterproofing (such as ports) is challenging and often fails in sports equipment. For mobile phones etc., it is easier to use waterproof USB-C/etc ports because they will not dump sweat/dirt/mud/etc. in them every day. However, once you start to pile up and dry sweat over and over again, it will kill everything. After the M400, Polar never installed another USB port in their watch for good reasons.

As far as wireless charging is concerned-to be honest, I was a bit confused there. If needed, I appreciate the ability to quickly unload and connect large files to the watch using USB. WiFi has certainly started to do this in some watches, but this is often not helpful for troubleshooting when you need it. Historically, the wireless charging speed of watches has also been slower, although we have also seen improvements in the past year or so.

Until then, if I have to use non-standard cables, I am grateful that I can get them cheaply in various forms from different suppliers.

With this-thanks for reading!

Thank you for your suggestion! It's perfect to add to the Christmas wish list something I want but don't really need, so I haven't started buying for myself.

That's too fast! The hockey pucks on Amazon.de are out of stock. I need to wait for the next container to arrive.

Thanks for posting. Thank you for taking the time to put these accessories together. I don’t have time to search all these accessories to see if they work. The fact that you did this saved me time = money! careful

We have some of the aforementioned "hockey puck" chargers, they do have problems, and the connection between my wife's fenix 6s and my old 935 is intermittent. It is often necessary to put some weight on the watch to keep them charged.

My 945LTE seems to refuse to charge any "hockey puck" and my wife's fenix 6s Garmin cable at all. It seems that my 945LTE has a slightly different charging connector function. However, the cable that comes with the 945LTE works very reliably with it.

The rogue heard the sound of the hockey puck. Overall, the feedback there is very good. I have heard that some people are not good at hockey here and there. This roughly sounds like your situation, because you have multiple watches that have problems with the same hockey puck.

I have a FR945LTE, I had no problem with ice hockey yesterday, and I have been using them on every watch in the Garmin team. So they can definitely work, but I guess there is a problem with your hockey connector.

I ran into the same problem with the recommended ice hockey charger. I used two of them, and the watch (Fenix 5 plus) will no longer connect at some point. I used one of them 20 times before it failed. The connection seems to be loose.

I can't say that I am impressed with Garmin's connector design. The OEM cable that came with the watch can now only be connected intermittently after a few years of use. I have never encountered any other type of computer cable that fails at the speed that Garmin designed.

Yes, my wife's Fenix 5S (original, not Plus) can't connect with her normal cable at all, but it performs better on ice hockey, I think it is because the ice hockey supports the weight.

I am curious why she does not upgrade, I assume that the girl can choose any watch? My significant other really likes one of the F5 designs and doesn’t like all the designs and color combinations. Of course, she doesn't actually care about the technical aspects! It is true that I just bought the F6pro, because there is no solar ti version in silver, so I think technology is not everything.

Some discs have slightly smaller "cutouts" for optical HR sensors. I had trouble connecting with these foods, and the hockey puck with larger cutout worked perfectly (945 and Fenix 5)

I have also seen (and experienced) a pin stuck in the hockey puck. It seems that some small corrosion has occurred on both the watch end and the plug end, which prevents the pin from extending and touching. I can release it after poking it with a small flat tip or a paperclip, and add some isopropyl alcohol.

Appreciate the other options there! I recommend anyone who wants a durable cable to buy a USB-C adapter and buy an Anker cable.

Just for the record, I also obtained two packs (or only two packs) of ice hockey chargers through the link in the old post. One died when it arrived, one started to work, then worked intermittently, and then "intermittent work" became so rare that it basically died too. I bought it about a year ago and stopped using it after 3 months.

Sounds great, thanks for confirmation. Considering how low their cost is, I am considering trying another set (I _ think_ they work better earlier, maybe they just make us tired).

Hi Dave, the girl here 🙂 Yes, I agree with the design of your partner's watch since Fenix 5S. Personally, I really like the brushed champagne bezel and suede strap on my watch. The size and weight of the watch suit me very well, but I like the large dial. In addition, my watch still works normally, and is actually more than kills for the functions I use these days. Therefore, there is no need to invest more money for unnecessary upgrades. But this is just me.

I have a few small ice hockey chargers and brackets that I bought based on your previous recommendations-but in less than a year of use, all these chargers have affected me. I hope I know what I did wrong, I'm pretty sure mine is much less than yours!

I have some extra versions of OEM Garmin cables and luckily they still work.

It seems that the key ring adapter is sold out or unavailable in the UK-following the link, I only got a few USB-A Garmin charging cables, but I couldn't find anything through searching.

I still see them in stock. Out of curiosity, does this link get you to the right place on Amazon UK: link to dcra.in

Hi Ray, the link in the post does not link to the correct location on Amazon UK. The link you posted in the comments is indeed the case!

One small correction: We have 3 garmin watches in our house, all 3 have different directions. The ports are located on my left and right sides (fenix 5 plus/fenix 6x pro) and on the top of my wife’s vivoactive 3. I used the disc and the original cable, and the result was almost the same. Sometimes it does not work, but there is usually no problem after cleaning the contacts on the watch. I might check it out and see if I can find a reasonably priced stall somewhere to test it out (no Amazon here).

Same as Venue SQ, the connector is at the top.

After using Fenix 5 for about 12 months, I ran into the same problem with hockey. Sometimes it will work normally, sometimes I will disconnect and reconnect and place something on top of the watch until a stable connection is established. Nevertheless, for the price, when I used it for 12 months before the problem started, it was hard to complain.

It would be great if the small key ring charger can be charged.

The Garmin accessory I really like is the round/hockey-hockey watch-shaped power bank-maybe 5mm thick. Even a very small unit can significantly increase the "battery life" for super events and so on.

I bought two of these old hockey pucks not long ago, and they stopped working a few months later. At first there is no data transfer but it is still charging and then there is no connection at all. Used on two different Fenix 6X

Hi, thanks for these useful suggestions. Unfortunately, the keychain on amazon.fr costs 15,44 euros. I don’t think VAT represents the 200% of the price you see. Amazon.de will not consider my French main account. Can't wait to try these, never worry I forgot my charging cable🙂

Imagine how cool it would be if the key ring adapter could actually add an Ickle recharger to your watch. Once the warranty period expired, my Vivoactive started to have difficulty recording bicycle rides, so now I need to charge it during long-distance rides. But at least that adapter means I don't need to carry Garmin special cables and USB cables with me. Currently not available on Amazon UK BTW.

My 935 or VA4S often fails to charge. This is not because of a bad connection. I put them on the charger, their HR LED turns off, the screen shows that they are charging, and my built-in power meter indicates that these things have started to consume current. But sometimes they are still on the charging screen after a few minutes, but the current has dropped to zero. I left them on for a few hours, but they don't charge-in fact, it loses 2%-so they don't stop charging temporarily because of overheating or for any reason.

Have you seen anything like this? I can't be the only one experiencing this problem, but I have never seen a comprehensive test video like what you did to Hero 10 overheating.

No, this is not normal. I have never seen it before (on any watch, on any cable). Either charging or not charging (and the charging screen is not displayed).

According to my experience with the Garmin charging port, if it is not charging, it will not display the charging icon, usually because the port or cable is blocked and a brittle connection cannot be made. Sometimes, if it is a port problem, it can be solved by good cleaning. However, if it is a cable problem, then in most cases it is best to just buy a new cable (whether it is a Garmin cable or another cable).

If you have tried other cables, and probably other ports (because you obviously have some tools to measure it), then honestly I have no idea. It's so weird

They must not like Canadians, because "two packs of USB-C Garmin watch keychain charger 8.99 dollars" is 31.35 Canadian dollars. I know there is an exchange rate to take into account, but it is much more.

Yes, the exchange rate in Canada is indeed high: the fun of the Amazon algorithm...By the way, I bought 2 ice hockey pucks after DCR recommendation 2 years ago and use them often... and there is no problem.

How long can you store it without using it and still charge it? I will use it for emergency charging or in the field.

Don’t charge, just connect to a cable or USB port, but wouldn’t it be nice if they do?

Yes! Finally USB-C to Garmin! Great discovery of mine!

By the way: I have used the Tusita USB-A to Garmin cable before, and they all work well, so I am not worried about the "4.5/5" rating.

Interesting article. When on a bicycle trip, I will find it very useful to be able to browse the contents of my Garmin watch from the “File Manager” application like using an OTG USB stick. In this way, in case the plan changes, I can track another route and transfer it to my watch via wire transfer. Bluetooth file transfer is not always very useful.

Oh, this did appear on the day when I compared the original Garmin cable and the unnamed aftermarket cable (50 cm cable, "a pair of cables, different lengths" variant from the connected USB-C cable) on the scale, look at me Which one will pack for light travel. Guess I will add another item to my charging library: the adapter will be used in a very lightweight backpack set (it will be used with the very compact "Goobay 73276", which is obviously no longer manufactured), and the "50 cm" will be used In the case of luggage being transported by bicycle, it will be downgraded to be used with a large 4x charger.

It’s a shame that Uncle Bob’s online store failed to display the adapter in the "Products related to this item" or "Customers who viewed this item also viewed" lists. I know I'm looking for alternatives in these lists.

I already have a stand (a lot smaller), but that key ring charger is a great idea, thank you for your idea!

USB-C seems to be a wise move for upcoming devices.

As someone who went to India on a business trip 2 years ago (forgot two spare Garmin cables), I can confirm that it is impossible to find a Garmin charger anywhere without buying the entire watch. (Saw it in Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune). So these USB-C solutions will save me. Thanks!

Are any of these plugs suitable for Garmin 645M? (Currently using a clip-on charger, so no?)

Thank you Ray. By the way, the USB C pocket adapter you linked will not be shipped in the US until mid-January 2022. Now, if they just made a right angle. If you are doing long-term activities and do not want to remove the watch to charge, then the hockey watch is more suitable. I also like to use the port cover between charges and occasionally use liquid contact lubricants. Some other Amazon models only say "USB A to USB C cable, not USB C to USB C". 🙁 I can attach the pocket adapter to my Nitecore power bank. Or connect to my USB multi-function cable. And save the cost of additional cables.

Ah, it seems that the specific item I linked is out of stock, but there are the same items here, only the ones listed in the inventory are different: link to amzn.to

I have hockey pucks and holder changers. Although they worked very well initially, after a while, satisfaction dropped: the holder charger stopped working completely, and the hockey pucks were only charged in "strange" positions (when your watch was in When the puck is on, but effectively next to it, because the charging connector has no direction). Surprisingly, the spare cable that comes with the watch is the most reliable charging solution

Are you worried about charging with a high-power USB c charger? Like a charger for Apple MacBook Pro?

There are no worries. For fun, I just plug it into my wall laptop USB-C 95w charger and my FR745. Charging is easy without any explosion.

The reason is because of the way the USB power supply works (simplified), the receiving device actually requests how much power it needs, and then the USB "transmits" the charger to provide the requested power. Therefore, although my 95w charger is much more powerful than FR745, it can only provide the weak power required by FR745.
